Tell us about yourself. Where do you live, what you do and the journey that has led you to where you are today?
My name is Hayley Karrina; I go by HK on most platforms. I was born and raised in the Downtown, Toronto area. I’m a woman who wears many hats, but all within the creative & visual arts field.
I’ve been seriously involved in the art/creative world for a decade now. I began my personal journey at the age of 5. My parents would take my older brother and I to the Art Gallery of Ontario to view current exhibitions and eat at their restaurant afterwards, every Sunday without fail! I was professionally trained in Opera from the time I was 6 years old and it just kept going from there. So naturally, when I got to University I studied Visual Arts & Communications. It was in Uni that I started to really think about the lack of representation for truly talented artists, and I knew that if I didn’t try to create an opening for myself and those around me no one else would.
I then created a magazine with a personal friend of mine by the name of “Verso” in 2016. We decided on the name Verso because in the art world it means the reverse side of a painting. We thought it truly represented the fact that we believed in art/artists being multidimensional; most things in life (and especially in the art industry) can be interpreted in more ways than one.
Since then I’ve put on Pop-Up Art events and helped local artists sell their works to a diverse group of people and currently I am working on a new instalment of my magazine and have a couple events planned for the year along with artists collaborations.
What's your favourite thing to do in the city?
A few of my favourite things to do in the city are: Going to concerts and events created by local talents with my friends, eating at some of Toronto’s best restaurants like JaBistro, D’bar, One, Pukka and Nota Bene (which sadly is now no longer open)
Your favourite quote to live by?
“We do what we have to so we can do what we want to.” ― Denzel Washington
Top 3 things that keep you motivated/inspired?
Going to the top contemporary art galleries in each city I travel to, Watching great films ( old and new), (fortunately enough) Being around creatives all the time.
Your top 3 favourite Goals a.f items?
My personalized Passport Holder (in the black of course) because I believe if you have one you love you’ll never be one of those people who actually lose their passport! The 1908 Travel Journal (yet again in black) because I always am writing ideas down and having meetings in various cafes around the city with other creatives and sometimes a laptop just isn’t where I want to write my notes. Last but not least, The A6 Agenda (in green) because it lets me track my day by the hour as well as things like my water intake and tbh I always need a reminder of that!
What is your definition of an ambitious female?
My definition of an ambitious female (no matter what field she is in) is one that doesn’t give up on what she truly believes in/ what she truly wants from herself or others.
And finally, what are your Goals/ plans for 2019?
My goals for 2019 are to keep creating artistic driven content and to continue to help give emerging artists a platform they can truly benefit from.
