Meet Jamila, An ambitious female (A.F) from our hometown Toronto, ON. We had the pleasure of working Jamila on our " The Signature Collection" photoshoot in December 2018. Want to know more about this beauty? Check out her interview below!
Tell us about yourself. Where do you live, what you do and the journey that has led you to where you are today?
I identify as a queer womyn of Filipino and Aruban descent raised in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. I would like to say I'm a jack-of-many-trades, so I'm always up to something different.
I am an aspiring entrepreneur, restaurant server, braid stylist, model, and all-around hustler. Hmmm, the journey that has led me to where I currently am has been a long one! I've always tried to "check all the boxes" when it came to a particular vision of success. I was in post-secondary school for what felt like ages and ended up with a diploma in Community and Justice Services and a bachelor of arts in Psychology.
I wanted to help others, and I grew in so many ways as I practiced within the human services field. However, I always had a burning desire to be a BOSS and build my own empire. After miserably working in what I thought was a step toward a "big girl job," a workplace injury caused me to take an extended leave from my job.
I felt at my lowest at this time, dreading having to return to a job I was not happy at. And it was then I decided I must follow my dreams and give it a shot. Part of this decision included quitting my job so that I can focus on starting a business of my own.
What's your favourite thing to do in the city?
My favourite thing to do is visit the Toronto Harbourfront and take the ferry out to the Toronto Islands in the summertime. It's so beautiful, and always reminds me of my birthday and Caribana.
Your favourite quote to live by?
"A winner is a dreamer who never gives up." -Nelson Mandela
Top 3 things that keep you motivated/inspired?
Travel, family, seeing others actualize their dreams and aspirations.
Your top 3 favourite Goals a.f items?
At the moment, I have the leather passport holder, personalized with my initials, which I am so excited to use on my next trip! I love neutral tones, so the Villa A6 agenda in it's more petite form is a must-have for me. And my third favourite is the leather card holder, and I need something that can hold a few key items and fit right in my back pocket.
What is your definition of an ambitious female?
My definition of an ambitious female is one who, regardless of her fears and insecurities, will always give her best effort.
And finally, what are your Goals/ plans for 2019?
My plan for 2019 is to launch my business and to continue to grow my YouTube channel. Most importantly, I would like to learn more about myself and continue to grow into the person I am to be. I'll be taking a solo trip to Central America in February of this year in the hopes of being pushed out of my comfort zone!
